2nd HCSM Summit 2016

Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health and Research Development (PCHRD) Successfully hosted 2nd Health Care Social Media Summit 2016 "Social Media & Healthcare: From Click to Brick" at Philippine International Convention Center last 21st of April, 2016.

The event highlighted the intervention of Social Media as a tool to connect with people for further development of healthcare awareness. The summit was divided with six breakout sessions or tracks: Ethics, Patients' Stories, Education, Policy, Advocacy and Research. The summit served as platform to discuss further development and collaboration for more effective use of social media

I chose Education and Research track at meeting room 2-3. I was able to meet great people that taught me even i'm young, age is just pure number, no sense of discrimination. I was in a crowd of professionals, doctors, physicians and other health care industry players.

I chose education because our blog aims to motivate student and young individuals (not only in academe) through social media. Dr. Nomar Alviar gave us insights for variety of forms for learning structure and other effective learning activities and Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan taught us how twitter can be your classroom though social media interaction and making your class more interesting.

According to Dr. Iris "Using Twitter improves brevity and depth of the students" i highly agree about it. Some of my classmates doesn't like twitter because of 140 character limitation but for me i saw it more like a challenge and that is the reason why i used it more than facebook. At the end of the session we are expected for a group output of making learning plans using social media tool. The interesting part of it, we are able to optimize what social media tools we know and how we are able to incorporate it as learning platform.

In Research Track, Dr. Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales gave us insights of how we are able to make use social media as avenue of data gathering and collating necessary information for development of Research. We can make used of it for literature search, making use of micro-blogging and scientific social networking sites like researchgate.net and herdin.ph. Dr. Venus also gave us ethical concepts for social media use. At the end of the session we are expected to make a pre-proposal to conduct health research using social media.

For the totality of the summit, the event turned out to be an avenue of meeting great people and knowing that people are willing to make an impact through social media. But like what the event said Social Media is only a tool to make a change we want to see, we have to make a move to make an impact. As a youth, a summit like this gave us more broader knowledge of how infinite and powerful the technology and to be specifically the Social Media. #IskolarAko
